
Why Does My Custom Bag Look Different From My Design? The RGB vs. CMYK Gap, Explained
You approved the design. The mockup looked perfect. Then the bags arrived — and something’s off. The color is darker, more muted, or just… not quite right.

The gap between screen and print isn’t a mistake. It’s physics.
What You See on Screen vs. What You Hold in Your Hands
Your monitor, phone, and laptop all display color the same way: by emitting light. Every pixel on your screen is a tiny lamp. Your logo looks vibrant because it’s literally glowing at you.
Printed packaging works the opposite way. Ink sits on paper and reflects the light around it. There’s no light source inside the bag — it’s just ink bouncing light back at your eyes.
These are two completely different systems for creating color. And the gap between them is real, measurable, and unavoidable.
The Physics Behind the Gap: RGB vs. CMYK
RGB is how your screen works. Red, green, and blue light mix together to create color. Full intensity of all three = white. All off = black. Your screen can produce around 16.7 million colors this way.
CMYK is how printing works. Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks sit on paper and absorb light rather than emit it. The more ink, the darker the result.
Here’s the core problem: CMYK can only reproduce about 70% of the colors RGB can display. The other 30% don’t exist in ink form. Those electric blues, vivid neons, and glowing greens on your screen? No combination of ink can replicate them on paper.
Not a calibration issue. Not a quality issue. Just physics.
A few things that make this worse:
- Paper stock matters. White coated paper gives the most accurate result. Kraft paper makes everything warmer and darker — that bright yellow in your logo may come out closer to ochre.
- Lamination matters. Gloss lamination adds saturation and vibrancy. Matte lamination softens everything.
- Lighting matters. Screens are usually viewed in a dim room. Physical bags are seen under retail lights, warehouse fluorescents, or natural daylight — all of which shift how color looks.
This Happens to Everyone

Color shift isn’t a sign of poor quality. It happens to every brand, every order, everywhere.
The industry even has a standard unit for measuring it: Delta E (ΔE). A Delta E of 1 means the difference is invisible to most people. Under 3 is the commercial pass standard. At 5+, most people start to notice.
ISO 12647-2 — the packaging printing standard — officially allows up to Delta E 5 for solid color patches. That’s not a secret. It’s a documented tolerance that exists because screen-to-print variation is unavoidable.
Nike, Apple, LVMH — they all have dedicated color management teams and still operate within these tolerances.
A Real Conversation We Had Last Week
We recently worked with a client who was very particular about color — which is completely fair. Color is part of their brand.
Early in the conversation, we sent them a photo of the actual bag. They noticed straight away that the color looked different from what they’d seen on their screen.
We told them exactly what we’re telling you now: different screens display color differently. Put the same photo on an iPhone, a Windows laptop, and a Samsung tablet, and you’ll see three slightly different colors. That’s before print even enters the picture.
Their response? They wanted to know how to fix it.

So What Can You Do About It?
You can’t eliminate the gap entirely, but you can manage it.
1. Convert your files to CMYK before submitting
If your designer built your logo in RGB (common when it was designed for web use), it needs to be converted to CMYK before going to print. The automatic conversion that happens in production is less accurate than a controlled conversion done by your designer.
Ask for a CMYK version of your logo with the exact C/M/Y/K values noted. This gives the printer a precise target.
2. Use Pantone colors for brand-critical shades
Pantone is a standardized color matching system — a library of over 1,800 pre-mixed ink formulas, each with a unique number. If your brand color is Pantone 286 C, any qualified printer anywhere in the world can mix that exact color from the same formula.
Pantone printing costs more than standard CMYK (you’re paying for a custom ink mix), but it eliminates the guesswork for colors where consistency really matters — like a logo or a signature brand color. We offer Pantone matching on all our custom bags — including , , and .
3. Request a physical sample before production
This is the most reliable way to manage expectations. A physical sample shows you exactly what your chosen paper, ink, and lamination will look like together under real light.
Don’t approve based on a digital mockup alone. The mockup is a simulation — it’s still showing you an RGB image on a screen. A physical sample is the real thing.
4. Tell your supplier what matters to you
If color accuracy is a priority, say so upfront. A good supplier will flag if your design includes colors that are difficult to reproduce in CMYK, suggest Pantone alternatives, and tell you which paper stocks will get you closest to your target.
