Paper Bag Handle Types: A Complete Guide for Custom Packaging
The handle is one of the last things most brands think about — and one of the first things their customers notice.
Pick the wrong handle and you get complaints: straps that dig into the palm, eyelets that tear through the paper, or a punched hole that ruins an otherwise clean design. Pick the right one and the bag feels intentional, sturdy, and on-brand from the first carry.

Round Rope Handles
Round rope handles are flexible, strong, and comfortable to hold. They’re one of the most popular choices for retail and gift packaging because they work well across a wide range of bag sizes and weights.
1. Polyester Rope Handle
Polyester rope handles are the most cost-effective round handle option. Made from synthetic fibers, they’re durable, water-resistant, and hold color well — so your custom color or branding stays vibrant even after repeated use.
They come in two types: core-spun and non-core-spun. Core-spun rope has an inner core that makes it significantly stronger, which matters if your bags carry heavier products.
2. Cotton Rope Handle
Cotton rope handles are made from 100% natural fibers and are fully biodegradable — a solid choice for boutiques, gift shops, or any brand with eco-conscious packaging goals.
They feel softer in the hand than polyester and give bags a natural, warm look. Like polyester rope, cotton rope also comes in core-spun and non-core-spun versions.
3. Crochet Paper Handle
Crochet paper handles are braided from paper strings — fully recyclable and a practical way to build sustainability into your packaging without sacrificing strength.
They typically come in black, white, and brown, and are sturdy enough for everyday use. Of the round rope options, these are the most expensive. But demand is growing as more brands move toward paper-based materials across their entire packaging line.
Flat & Ribbon Handles
Flat and ribbon handles sit flush against the bag and give a cleaner, more polished look than rope. They work especially well for gift packaging and luxury retail bags.
4. Flat Paper Handle
Simple, practical, and fully recyclable. Flat paper handles are made from folded paper — sturdy enough for light to medium items, and available in standard colors like brown, white, and black.
They’re the default handle for kraft paper bags and are a budget-friendly choice that still looks clean and professional.
5. Satin Ribbon Handle
Satin ribbon handles are the standard for gift and luxury packaging. The smooth, glossy surface adds a premium feel, and the wide color range makes it easy to match your brand palette exactly.
You can also print your logo directly on the ribbon, or add foil stamping for extra brand impact.
6. Grosgrain Polyester Handle

7. Microgroove Nylon Handle
Want a polished handle without spending more than you need to? Microgroove nylon is worth a look.
Woven from nylon threads, this handle is about twice as thick as grosgrain polyester — which means it can carry more weight and keeps its shape over time. The fine, smooth texture makes it a good fit for jewelry bags, cosmetics packaging, or anything that needs a premium finish.
Assembly note: the standard spec for embedded (sewn-in) attachment is 55 filaments; for shoe-buckle attachment, it’s 45 filaments.

Cotton twill handles are woven from natural cotton in a diagonal pattern. They’re soft on the hand and comfortable to carry — particularly for heavier items where a rigid handle would cut into the palm.
Like cotton rope, these handles are eco-friendly and biodegradable, which makes them a natural fit for sustainable packaging lines.
Twisted Handles
Twisted handles are the standard choice for high-volume packaging. They’re affordable, practical, and work across almost every paper bag type.
9. Twisted PP (Polypropylene) Handle
Made from three strands of polypropylene twisted together, PP handles are stronger than they look. They keep their shape and color over time — even after repeated use, they still look clean.
10. Twisted Paper Handle
The most widely used handle in paper packaging. Twisted paper handles are made by winding paper tightly into a cord — fully biodegradable and often made from recycled materials.
They’re versatile enough for everything from grocery bags to boutique shopping bags. If your brand prioritizes sustainability and needs a cost-effective default, this is usually the answer.
Die-Cut Handle

Die-cut handles are punched directly into the paper bag — no additional handle materials or attachments needed. The handle opening is part of the bag structure itself.
Because the handle and the bag are one piece, its strength depends entirely on your paper stock. For lightweight retail bags, standard kraft or coated paper works fine. If your bags carry heavier products, we recommend adding a 400gsm cardboard reinforcement board inside the handle area — this distributes the load more evenly and significantly reduces the risk of tearing at the edges.
Die-cut handles can be shaped as simple ovals or cut into custom shapes that work with your logo. They also ship flat, which makes storage and logistics more efficient.
Sewn-In Handle: The No-Hole Option
If you’ve seen a high-end retail bag with a completely clean front face — no visible holes, no eyelets — that’s a sewn-in handle.
Instead of punching through the bag face, the handle is embedded into the bag structure during production. Here’s how it works: the top of the bag uses a double-fold opening design, and two internal reinforcement boards are added on either side of the handle attachment point. The handle sits flush at the top, and the front of the bag stays completely clean.
This construction is more durable than it looks. The double-fold and reinforcement boards spread the load across a wider area, so the handle holds up well — even with heavier products.
Sewn-in handles work with most flat handle materials: satin ribbon, grosgrain polyester, microgroove nylon, and cotton twill. If the front appearance of your bag matters, this is usually the right call.
